Apologies in advance for combining these two items into one email...
As many of you have already heard or seen on Facebook, longtime friend and great biking buddy John Kissane was seriously banged up in a bike accident on Jefferson Road around 6 p.m. last night (Tuesday, March 31, 2015). He was hit by a car. John suffered some broken bones and other injuries but, thank God, we hear that he will be OK in the long run. His beloved, home-built, classic bike (see image on right) is a total loss.
I've known John and his family for a long time, and got to know him even better when the two of us rode together for significant part of last year's AthSav ride. His wife, Amy, is of course our tireless and fabulous AthSav ride coordinator, and his daughter Emma is great friends with my Mollie.
We've had two dear biking friends hurt in accidents the past few weeks. Karl Scott got fell during the Firefly Ride and broke his collarbone.
You will not find two smarter, kinder, better people than John and Karl. Guys, we love you both and wish you a speedy recovery. Thoughts and prayers go out to both of you.
The other item I wanted to share was the RideWithGPS map of this Saturday's OC Dean Birthday Challenge - 82 miles which five of us completed on a test run with OC yesterday (which means, yes, at the age of 80 he will be completing two 80-mile rides this week. I think he looked fresher than any of us at the end of yesterday's ride).
Here is the link: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7357223. It is completely accurate except for one point at the 64.5-mile mark. There, we walked our bikes - carefully! - directly across Hwy 316 to head towards Bogart, but I couldn't get RideWithGPS to represent that. The Birthday Challenge is this Saturday, 9 a.m., departing from Homewood Hills Shopping Center, 2475 Jefferson Road (ironically, just moments from where John was injured last night).
OK, all, I'm writing this early in the morning, because I was too upset by the news to go back to sleep. Be careful out there, good friends - we need every one of you.
